2019  Antique Car Display - Maryland Air National Guard - Family Day

 photo
On Sunday June 2nd, members of Chesapeake Region participated - with an antique car display - at the annual Maryland Air National Guard Family Day event, held at Martin State Airport in Middle River, Maryland.

 photo
We had quite a diverse group of antique vehicles on display.

 photo
New to the Chesapeake Region "garage" was Debbie's newly-acquired Opel.

 photo
John Jr. had planned to bring his 1949 Chrysler - but the car decided otherwise. Instead he brought his trusty 1965 Plymouth Baracuda.

 photo
Son, John III, brought his unique, and always attention-attracting, 1978 Dodge Lil' Red Express.

 photo
Buzz's 1990 C-4 Chevrolet Corvette.

 photo
Pat's 1964 Lincoln Continental 4-door convertible.

 photo
Jerry's national award-winning 1954 Kaiser Manhattan.

 photo
Air National Guard members were likewise encouraged to display their own collector vehicles, such as this stunning blue Chevrolet Chevelle.

 photo
Collector vehicles of all types and ages were displayed.

Some very interesting collector vehicles adorned the display area parking lot.

The weather was warm and sunny, and the gathered Chesapeake Region members sought out some shade from the shadow of an adjacent building. Gracious members of our host, the Maryland Air National Guard, stopped by frequently to make sure our needs were being met, supplying us with drinking water and inviting us to dine on the free food.

Throughout the day, visitors came by to look over the assembled vehicles and to talk to our club members.

The undoubted star of the car show, however, was Jerry's 1954 Kaiser Manhattan.

 photo
Jerry graciously engaged with the many admirers, with tales and technical details about his stunning car.

 photo
With printed material in hand, Jerry kept them amazed at the colorful history of the Kaiser organization, and their innovative automobiles.

This was a great opportunity to introduce the many, local military men, women and children to the lure of owning collector vehicles - and to introduce them to the Antique Automobile Club of America, and our local club: Chesapeake Region.

The undisputed stars of the military equipment displayed were the Fairchild-Republic A-10 "warthog" aircraft on the tarmac. The A-10, is very effective at close-in air support of ground troops, and has been invaluable in recent Middle East conflicts.

 photo
The A-10 aircraft later took to the air in several dramatic fly-overs of the crowd.

 photo
Also displayed were aircraft of the local Civil Air Patrol.

The A-10 Thunderbolt II "Warthog" is the mainstay of the Air Force, Maryland Air National Guard base at Martin State Airport. Entering service in 1976, its continued use in year 2019 is rather controversial within the Air Force mamagement. It proved very effective in the first Iraq war, and has seen action in every major conflict since. With armaments constantly upgraded, approximately 350 remain in service.

The Chesapeake Region, Antique Automobile Club of America wishes to thank the Maryland Air National Guard for their invitation for us to participate in the 2019 Family Day event. Our members enjoyed your gracious hospitality and we hope that the Family Day attendees likewise enjoyed our antique car display.
